Book Review: Pestilence by Laura Thalassa
Potential Spoiler Alert
If you're a fan of true enemies to lovers tropes, you'll enjoy Pestilence by Laura Thalassa. This is book 1 of Laura's Four Horsemen series.
Based on the stories of the four horsemen of the apocalypse in the Book of Revelations in the Bible, this fictional series will cover Pestilence, War, Famine and Death.

Pestilence isn't a man. He hates humans, actually.
They're messy, corrupt, and evil.
They've wasted and destroyed their world, and shower hate on their own people.
And he's there on a mission.
To destroy humanity.
But along the way, he meets a human that, like many others, tried to kill him. This female not only shot him but tried to burn his body.
Tried.
Because Pestilence can't die.
He's immortal.
And he takes her as his prisoner instead of killing her.
He's never done that before.
Throughout the book, we see Pestilence start to warm up to Sara, and maybe even liking some of her human characteristics.
And Sara can't help but see Pestilence differently as he destroys the worlds in front of her.
As Pestilence's prisoner, he doesn't let her out of his sight, and gives her zero privacy, because god forbid, she might try to escape instead of take a bath.
Yet, Pestilence doesn't really sleep. He doesn't need sleep. At a pivotal moment in the book, Pestilence lays down with Sara and shares a small tent on a cold winter night. Things really start to shift in Pestilence's mind around that time, and we get to see his cold exterior soften and warm to Sara's character.
Personally we love a good enemies to lovers, forced proximity, one bed situation. ❤️
We chose to listen to the audiobook, narrated by full cast, including sound effects. If you want to feel like you're in a movie when you listen to audiobooks, we recommend listening to the Graphic Audio/Dramatized versions with a full cast!
We couldn't help but listen to Laura's novel in ALL our spare time. The character dynamic between Pestilence and Sara felt relevant, even though he's immortal. We see the push and pull of their characters, and through Laura's storytelling, we get to know the characters and WHY they are the way they are. It's set in a post-apocalyptic world of sorts (think Hunger Games or Walking Dead - only without the zombies), so it's got that desperate, I'll-do-anything-to-survive warrior vibrato with Sara and her human compatriots. It's admirable, and what we want to see in a heroine.
While Sara attempts to thwart and deny any actual feelings for Pestilence, he's stunningly hot, and she's a woman who appreciates a hot male. Who cares if he's a monster? When one thing leads to another ...
Yep.
But for us, it's the freaking YEARNING that Pestilence starts feeling for Sara, and his actions speak louder than his words, his past, or even the mission he's put on earth to complete.
Serious yearning here.
Our rating:
